The Admiral's Wind Ensemble

Wednesday 1.30 - 3.30

This popular group provides an opportunity for wind players who may not have kept up their playing. If you still own a concert flute/piccolo, clarinet, bass clarinet or bassoon, you are welcome to join us and enjoy learning and playing with others. You need not have played in a group recently or at all. ABRSM Grade 3 to 6+ is the present spread of our ability; and basic knowledge of sight-reading would make you feel more comfortable. We presently have 3 flutes, 3 clarinets and a tenor-saxophone/sacbut player. We are particularly keen to welcome more concert, alto and bass flutes, a bass clarinet and/or a bassoon.
This is our 4th year exploring every style of music – from Tudor madrigals, baroque, classical and romantic period pieces; and as a fun contrast, big band and jazz standards and theme music from stage and screen.
Each week we begin with warm-ups and tuning exercises which progress into playing in 4 or more separate parts. We have expanded our customized repertoire to over two dozen new compositions and arrangements especially for AWE. As we work on this music, we enjoy working together on various playing & listening skills; and sharing easier ways to improve our breathing, reading, tuning, playing stamina and musicianship.
You will be expected to practise during the week, but fun and good humour in our weekly sessions is unavoidable! What you used to love about playing music at school and college can be rediscovered together with AWE. Please come and try us out!
