Friday 10.30 - 12.30
The waves crashing on the beach at Aldeburgh or on the north Cornwall rocks, Maypole dancing in a West Yorkshire village, a bulldog falling into the River Severn - all these events have found their way into music. So join this 6 session musical journey round England and explore how particular places have been reflected in music and composers have adjusted to where they are living. Join Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams as they trudge through the Essex countryside, or Elgar riding his beloved bicycle across the Malvern Hills. No prior musical knowledge is required and students will get a chance after week 1 to decide which regions to ‘visit’. The lectures will be illustrated by appropriate music, photographs and DVDs.
