The Figure in Art

This eight week course will provide an introduction to help evaluate how and why artists have portrayed the human form from the earliest beginnings through to contemporary works. It is intended to create an opportunity to discuss the pivotal role the human figure plays in the history of art. Students will consider how, in context, the figure has been used to inform, instruct, and illustrate the evolution of religious, social, moral and political thinking. Sessions will include: Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Byzantine; Medieval; Renaissance; Baroque; Victorian; Impressionism and Post Impressionism; Decoration of the body; other ‘isms’ of the early 20th century including Pop Art.
